Retail workers in Harrogate are being encouraged to attend a dedicated drop-in session next month focusing on shopcrime, anti-social behaviour and staff safety, organisers have announced. The event is scheduled for Monday 9 November and will run between 10am and midday at the Victoria Shopping Centre.
Part of national Safer Business Action Week
The gathering is organised by Harrogate BID and is being held as part of Safer Business Action Week, which takes place nationally between 9 and 15 November. It will bring together the BID’s Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP), North Yorkshire Police and representatives from national retail support organisations to brief staff on measures to reduce crime and protect retail workers.
Briefings will be given during the two-hour drop-in at 10.30am, 11am and 11.30am, and attendees can come at any point during the session, which will be held in the shopping centre’s first-floor meeting room.
Who will be present and what will be covered
Organisers say the session will set out how local initiatives link with national campaigns aimed at reducing abuse and offending against people who work in shops. Groups due to share information include:
- Harrogate BID’s Business Crime Reduction Partnership
- North Yorkshire Police
- National charities and campaigns such as the Retail Trust, ShopKind and the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW)
The programme will cover topics ranging from practical safety measures for staff to the wider partnership work aimed at tackling verbal and physical abuse in retail settings.
“We also want to highlight the wider work taking place nationally to address the challenges faced by retail workers, particularly the verbal and physical abuse that can unfortunately be part of their working day.”
The comment was provided by Paul Evans, manager of the Business Crime Reduction Partnership at Harrogate BID, who is overseeing the event logistics and liaison with police and partner organisations.
Context and potential impact
Retail staff across the UK have increasingly been vocal about the scale of abuse and theft encountered in their workplaces. Partnership briefings such as this aim to combine local policing responses with support services and national campaigning to improve reporting, staff welfare and deterrence.
While the session is short in duration, organisers intend it to serve both as a practical briefing and as an opportunity to signpost shopworkers to longer-term support, including advice on welfare, legal options and reporting routes. The involvement of national bodies such as USDAW and the Retail Trust is designed to ensure attendees are made aware of charitable support and union-led resources.
For retailers and staff, the immediate benefits include updated information on local crime prevention measures, an opportunity to report or discuss recurring incidents with the BCRP and police, and contacts to national campaigns advocating for safer retail workplaces.

Organisers have said the drop-in format is deliberate: it allows staff on varying shifts to attend without committing to a full programme and also enables one-to-one discussions with BCRP officers and partner representatives.
Those who cannot attend in person are expected to be able to access guidance from the participating organisations through their usual channels; however, the face-to-face element is being promoted as an important way to build local intelligence and trust between retailers and enforcement or support agencies.
The event forms one element of a national push during Safer Business Action Week to sharpen co-ordinated responses to shopcrime and the abuse of retail staff, combining prevention, enforcement and welfare measures.
