Residents of a quiet Swindon cul‑de‑sac were left shaken after a prolonged armed police operation on Sunday evening that saw officers use a battering ram, deploy specialist paramedics and employ a first‑person view (FPV) drone to clear a property.
Heavy response as officers surround property in Okus
Armed response vehicles arrived in Bacon Close, Okus, at around 7.30pm on Sunday (18 October) and surrounded a house following reports that a suspect might be in possession of a firearm. The incident prompted cordons and a visible presence from Wiltshire Police and partner agencies for the duration of the stand‑off.
At roughly 7.45pm, firearms officers forced entry to the property by breaching the front door with a battering ram. Officers could be heard ordering an occupant to come out and surrender, and several people left the house and were detained at gunpoint by attending officers.
"Officers could be heard saying they believed a suspect had a gun."
The operation continued for about two hours as firearms teams maintained a containment around the property. At one stage additional support arrived from Gloucestershire Police in the form of an armed response vehicle, and a National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter from Benson, Oxfordshire, was deployed overhead.
Specialist medical and drone teams assist
Specialist paramedics from South Western Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) were also present. Two paramedics wearing ballistic helmets and body armour attended the scene while the armed response progressed.
In a further demonstration of specialist capability, firearms officers later used an FPV drone to enter and clear the property once the immediate threat assessment allowed. Police said the stand‑off concluded by around 11pm, when three people were in custody.
Arrests and links to earlier aggravated burglary
Wiltshire Police has confirmed that three people have been arrested in connection with an aggravated burglary at an address in Highworth on Thursday 15 October. The suspects — two women and a man all in their 40s — were arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and remained in custody at Gablecross Police Station when the force issued an update.
Police have said it is alleged one of the suspects was in possession of a weapon during the burglary, although the force has not established the type of weapon allegedly involved.
- Location: Bacon Close, Okus, Swindon
- Initial arrival: c. 7.30pm, Sunday 18 October
- Forced entry: c. 7.45pm (battering ram)
- Duration: approximately two hours, ended by c. 11pm
- Arrests: three people (two women, one man; all in their 40s)
The visible nature of the response — including officers trained on the property, specialist paramedics in protective kit and aerial support — led to road closures and a cordon of Bacon Close and an adjacent alleyway to keep members of the public away while enquiries continued.
Chief Inspector Paul Saunders, who attended the scene in plain clothes and appeared to be coordinating the response, and other officers worked alongside colleagues from Gloucestershire Police and South Western Ambulance Service throughout the incident.
Community impact and ongoing enquiries
For residents the operation was an alarming interruption to an otherwise residential neighbourhood. Witnesses reported the sound of the door being forced and a prolonged police presence that lasted several hours into the night. While the situation ended without any immediate public injury being reported, lines of enquiry remain open.
Wiltshire Police said enquiries into the matter are ongoing. The force has linked the arrests to the separate aggravated burglary reported in Highworth three days earlier, and stated that it is alleged a weapon was carried during that burglary.
Anyone with information, or dash‑cam or doorbell footage from the area on the evening of 15–18 October, has been asked to contact Wiltshire Police to assist their investigation.
