Public safety concerns rise as multiple incidents strike during festival

Agartala, October 20: A succession of violent attacks, road accidents and other emergencies across Tripura over the last two days has cast a shadow over Durga Puja celebrations, with families in several districts counting losses and authorities launching investigations.

Incidents were reported from Dharmanagar, Agartala, Kamalpur, Kakraban, Udaipur, Karbook and Amatali, among other places, police sources said. The most serious case involved the alleged killing of two brothers at Baruakandi village panchayat under Dharmanagar police station on Maha Ashtami night.

Police identified the deceased as Jaydeep Roy Chowdhury and Shubdeep Roy Chowdhury. A third person, Bijan Das, sustained serious injuries and was taken for treatment. The circumstances of the incident are under probe, and police have not released further details pending investigation.

In Agartala, another violent episode left the secretary of the GB Market Puja Committee, Bikram Saha, with severe neck injuries. Saha required 19 stitches and is currently receiving hospital care after the assault, officials said.

A separate attack in the GB Market area involved a youth identified as Bappi, who is accused of attacking an individual named Shantu with a sharp-edged weapon on a public road near a hospital gate. Local police have registered cases and are pursuing leads, according to law-enforcement updates.

Road accidents claim lives amid festive travel

Road collisions during the festival period have added to the toll. A head-on crash between a motorcycle and an Alto car on the Dharmanagar–Haflong road resulted in the death of a 16-year-old girl, Purnima Basphar. Another person, Abhijit Das, 28, was hospitalised following the same crash. Authorities reportedly seized the car involved and detained its driver, named Pritam Dey.

In Karbook, a Class IX student, Shilpi Ram Reang, succumbed to injuries after a collision involving a scooter and a motorcycle at Karbook market. The student had been transported to GB Hospital in Agartala for treatment but died en route, officials said.

Other traffic mishaps reported during the period included a scooter crash at Rajchhantai in Bodhjungnagar and a motorcycle collision with a CNG vehicle near Malaynagar on the Amatali bypass. Emergency responders moved injured persons to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Law-and-order response and community impact

Police in affected areas have registered multiple cases and are conducting inquiries into the violent incidents and road crashes. The spate of events has unsettled residents and organisers of community Puja committees, who had been expecting large crowds at pandals across the state.

Local leaders and festival organisers face pressure to tighten security arrangements around pandals and major thoroughfares, particularly during peak hours when footfall and vehicular traffic surge. Citizens expressed concern about personal safety and demanded greater patrolling and quicker emergency response during public gatherings.

  • Fatalities confirmed: Two brothers in Dharmanagar area; two young people in road accidents.
  • Serious injuries: GB Market secretary required 19 stitches; Bijan Das and others hospitalised.
  • Police action: Multiple cases registered; at least one vehicle seized and driver detained.

As investigations proceed, police urged citizens to remain vigilant, cooperate with authorities and report suspicious movements. Festival committees were advised to coordinate with local administration for enhanced security and traffic management to reduce risks during congregations.

The wave of incidents has temporarily dampened public celebrations and highlighted persistent challenges in ensuring safety for mass religious gatherings and festive travel across Tripura. Authorities have pledged to expedite probes and strengthen visible policing ahead of the remaining festival days.
